CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I sat quietly in Jared's car while he drove us to school. Thoughts from my nightmare were still on my mind. Everything had happened like it had before; the only difference had been Mason's last statement.

He's coming for you. Who was coming for me?

I wasn't the only one deep in thought. Jared had been quiet since I'd told him about the new statement Mason had made in my nightmare. We still didn't know for sure if my nightmares were a side effect of the altering and Mason was somehow linked to me in my dreams or if the nightmares were just a manifestation of my subconscious. Maybe we were blowing this whole thing out of proportion.

I suppressed a yawn just as Jared pulled into the school parking lot. It was going to be a long day if I was so tired already. He appeared by my passenger door and helped me, being very careful not to touch my skin, but it wasn't too difficult as I was wearing a long-sleeved top and jeans, making my hands covered by the sleeves of my shirt. I was actually surprised that only Andrew had commented on my clothing, Stacy and Kennedy hadn't said a word. Maybe they thought I was trying to make a fashion statement.

Concern was evident in Jared's eyes but there was nothing either of us could do about it. I thought about getting myself an energy drink to help me through the day but I didn't know what effect it would have on my already volatile body. With my luck it would probably make the blue energy go nuts and I had images of me walking around school with my face flashing like a disco light.

While looking around to find my friends, I caught the new girl, Emma, watching Jared from the entrance of the school. Something unsettling unfolded in my stomach. I knew that look. I'm sure that was how I'd looked when I'd first seen him. A feeling of jealousy took me by surprise.

Jared started to walk and it pulled me away from my thoughts of Emma. I followed him to the group of Archaic who were waiting for us at the end of the parking lot. Nobody made a move to hug me. Tyler must have warned them to keep touching to a minimum, and I was thankful.

Unfortunately my human friends that appeared minutes later hadn't been given the same warning and I had to be careful as they both hugged me, making sure I didn't touch their skin with mine. If I'd managed to injure Jared so badly, I didn't want to see what I could do to them.

Kennedy was the first to mention the dark circles under my eyes.

"You look tired," she stated with concern.

"What are you doing that you're not getting enough sleep?" Stacy asked, wiggling her eyebrows at me. Only she could think like that.

"I wish," I replied. "I'm just not sleeping very well at the moment." I couldn't exactly tell them about the nightmares or Mason.
